Theater performances have been witnessed in Austin since the Paramount Theater opened here over 90 years ago. From its early days as home of Vaudeville and Broadway shows, the theater's history has seen it host performances from great stars such as the Marx Brothers, Houdini and Orson Welles. Later years have seen performances from Billy Joel, Willie Nelson and Lyle Lovett. Since its restoration in 1980, it has seen major events and national touring companies perform the likes of 'Evita' and 'My Fair Lady'. The theater sometimes shows movies and has been host to Hollywood movie premieres.
Austin's other theater is The State, which plays hosts to a number of non-profit arts groups. Offering diverse performances from local and national artists, it is the place to see the best up-and-coming new talent.
One of the best live music venues in the city is The Backyard. The outdoor venue has a great acoustic system and is known for its old oak tree in the middle. Recent years have seen performances from Neil Young and the Gypsy Kings.
