Milan boasts a rich cultural heritage and is home to a number of theatres including the world-famous Teatro alla Scala opera house at Piazza della Scala. La Scala is home to the Theatre Museum (Museo del Teatro) and a famous ballet school. The opera season begins on the 7th December, with performances continuing until early June. Tickets for the best seats are often sold out well in advance. Other notable Milan theatres include Piccolo Teatro, the Teatro Smeraldo, Teatro Nuovo, Teatro Carcano and the Teatro Nazionale.

Good live music can be found at numerous venues throughout Milan and concerts by famous artists are frequently held at the Leoncavallo. Rolling Stone is the place to hear rock bands, while jazz music can be heard at Le Scimmie. Music of all styles - rock, pop, blues, jazz, soul, folk and more - can be found at bars and clubs throughout the city.
