New York is arguably the theater capital of the world and visitors can watch a huge variety of shows year round. Blockbuster musicals, classics, comedy, opera, ballet and cutting-edge contemporary drama can all be found in New York's theaters, both on and off-Broadway. Many notable venues can be found in the theater district around Broadway.

The city also has a thriving live music scene. The famous Carnegie Hall hosts large concerts by established performers. Free opera and classical music concerts are held in New York's parks during the summer months, while many bars and nightclubs feature live music of all genres. A famous venue is the B. B. King Blues Club at Times Square.

Although Greenwich Village is hardly the centre of Beat culture and anti-establishment performances that it was in the sixties when Kerouac, Dylan, Baez and others were regulars, but does still retain its coffee shop culture where poetry readings and small performances take place in intimate venues.

Madison Square Gardens in Chelsea is one of the most popular venues in the city and a favourite with many artists, so don't be surprised to find one of your favourite bands or singers performing there during your visit.
