Paris has a fine theatrical tradition with many theatres staging classic plays by Moliere, Racine and others, as well as more contemporary works. Prestigious venues include the Comédie-Française and the Odéon. Ballet is performed at the impressive Opéra Garnier and many operas are shown at the Bastille Opéra.
Live music can be found at venues throughout Paris, ranging from smoky jazz clubs to huge stadiums hosting concerts by the biggest names in popular music. It's not quite as known for its nightlife as London or New York, but the French certainly do have their own characteristic evening charm.
Most tourists would have heard of the Moulin Rouge, which is actually an area that was dubbed with the name of a long-standing nightclub of the same name which to this day displays the large ornamental windmall outside. It's long past its time and the area isn't very genuine any longer, but there's nothing wrong with strolling the area and admiring the tacky tourism appeal of it all.
Le Caveau de la Huchette is a famous jazz bar featuring live acts, while American blues and rock bands play at the Chesterfield Café. A festival dedicated to the composer Chopin is held in Paris every summer. Parisians are also avid film-goers and there are many cinemas dotted throughout the city.
