Wellington has a reputation as a culturally rich city with several major theatres offering plays, ballet, opera and music. In addition there is the Fringe Festival held in late February, offering a diverse array of dance, theatre and music.

The Westpac St James Theatre is Wellington's premiere theatre, presenting several types of performances such as opera, ballet and music. The intimate Downstage Theatre is New Zealand's longest-running professional theatre and stages high quality productions from all over the world. Other noteworthy theatres include the Circa, BATS and the Hutt Repertory theatres.

There are a plethora of live music venues in Wellington, generally located in the Cuban street and Courtenay Place areas. Some of the more popular venues are the Bluenote, Indigo, Mondo Cucina, John Street Bar and Grill and the Matterhorn. The Beacon Woodfire Grill and Bar features live jazz every night from Thursday to Saturday.
